MVI Data Recovery - Laptop Drive Clicking

Discussed in this Video:

Here we have a two and a half inch laptop drive sent in for recovery. As far as we could tell it’s a mechanical fault with the drive. It’s a Hitachi Travel Star, the model number is HTS541616J9SA00. Now, what I am going to show you is what to do when you hear specific noises coming from the harddrive and how to prevent any data loss or data destruction.

Looking at the inside of the drive, as you can tell, here is the read/write Heads and this is obviously the platters and the platters will be basically where your data is stored.
If this area is damaged in anyway it makes the changes of recovery much harder. Now what I’m going to show you is when you do apply power to the drive what actually happens. I’m just going to go ahead and power that up now.

The drive powers up and the heads are going to try and initialize. At this point it’s obvious the drive is really struggling to initialize. The clicking noise you’re hearing is definitely and indication that the read/write Heads have failed.

The best course of action is to really just completely shut down the drive. What will happen is these heads will keep knocking around every time you power it up. This can eventually cause scorns and scrapes on the platters. Now if that happens, like I said, the chances of recovery are much lower.

What I’ll do is I will just go ahead and power this drive down now.
So if you do hear any of these noises coming from any type of drive, the best course of action is to shut it down immediately and contact a specialist, someone like MVI Data Recovery.
